The 4 Biggest Mistakes Made by Travel Job Hunters

In finding jobs — especially travel jobs, there are mistakes that we should avoid doing. These mistakes could cost you your potential dream job.

Travel job hunting can be very challenging. It requires proper outlook and attitude so one is suited to the career.

Here are the “don’t do-s” in finding jobs that involve travel:

1. Finding travel work ‘because it’s all fun.

Travel jobs are fun… but not entirely. Like any kind of job, they require discipline and sense of responsibility. No one deserves to be successful if they are not worth it.

Additionally, travel jobs involve skill and aptitude, no matter what kind of travel job it is. If you think it’s all about sipping margaritas and getting massages, then you are definitely wrong!

2. Applying for ‘any type’ of travel work opportunity.

Travel work opportunities come in all forms. There are medical jobs, tourism jobs, adventure jobs, and many more to mention.

Different jobs have different skill sets involved. If you don’t have the education or skills needed in a certain job, you won’t get hired. And if for some inexplicable reason you managed to land the job, you will just end up miserable because the job is not suitable for you.

Always aim for jobs based on your aspirations and abilities.

3. Relying Too Much on the Internet

Sure, there plenty of sites offering travel job listings. There are also online application systems to be exploited. Keep in mind that there are a lot of people like you and you are just one of the hundreds, even thousands who applied online.

The quantity of online applications diminishes your chances. It is very likely, that it will take at least a few months for the hiring personnel to notice your application. You can only hope the person in charge for this is not too tired — sorting loads of online applications can be very tiring – to truly consider yours.

Don’t underestimate the power of networking. The people you can connect with will give you better odds in finding that travel job you wanted. Plus, if you can go straight to the companies’ offices, please do. Actual presence of applicants speaks of determination and sincerity.

4. Not Updating and Customizing Your Resume

This is easily one of the worst mistakes a travel job hunter must avoid.

In every job position, there are certain characteristic and particular skills required. Hiring managers look for these in your submitted resume. So, if you fail to update and highlight relevant skills in your resume you will lose points from the employer’s point of view.

Always customize your resume based on the job position. Think of a resume as marketing tool. If you incongruously promote yourself for a specific job position, it will make no sense!

Temporary jobs and freelance work are good ways to earn a fast buck when in foreign countries. Sure it may take a little of your vacation time but with the proper mindset and attitude, you can make any task a fun experience. It will not impede your enjoyment and exploration; but rather help further it.
