A few years ago you had no way of keeping an eye on things at home cheaply and easily while you were overseas on a vacation or business trip. These days however, keeping tabs on your home while you’re away is quite possible. Whether your down the road or cruising the Bahamas, if you have an Internet connection you can keep an eye on your valuable property.
The technology may sound hi-tech but it’s certainly not out of reach for most people. Surveillance hardware is relatively inexpensive and able to be used all over the planet. Curiosity and a desire to learn new and interesting things is all you need to take advantage of this exciting technology.
Of course, to take advantage of this technology you’ll need a decent Internet connection. The Internet is the underlying technology that has made keeping an eye on your home from great distances possible. If you are planning to invest in an Internet powered surveillance system, you should first make sure that you can get a high speed Internet connection to your home. I wouldn’t recommend dial-up due to the low speeds being way too slow for video broadcasting.
There are two solutions that you can choose from, each one varying in features and complexity. One method requires the use of a PC. Home surveillance cameras are interconnected to survey key areas. They can either be set to record what they see or only activate once they detect movement. Price will be the biggest determining factor on whether or not you can adjust these settings.
The PC will display the output from the camera on it’s monitor and record the action onto the HDD or hard disk drive. You”ll need to connect the computer to the Internet through an ISP (Internet Service Provider), in order to watch the video from a distance. To watch the video while you are away from home you will need to log into the computer with a unique username and password. You can log in at any time, and operate the computer or watch the video images that the computer surveillance system has recorded.
The second solution is much simpler. Normally, this solution is used to check on a home through a single surveillance camera. With this setup you will be able to use one camera through your IP (Internet Protocol) address. By setting it up through your IP, all you need to do is check on things is to link directly to your IP address. Video is streamed around the clock so in that sense it is very similar to a webcam.
Whatever system you choose know that both are relatively simple to set up and use. For simplicity the second system can’t be beat but it does have it’s limitations. Both systems have great features and both have the ability to log in at any time.
Anytime you need to monitor your home from far away, home surveillance and the Internet is all you need. The Internet is a common commodity these days, capable of doing far more than anyone ever thought possible. With a small investment you’ll be able to utilize this technology to make sure your home is secure at all times.
