This development is the most exciting yet in the world of cellular technology, as this new category of phone will be able to bring, through significantly improve bandwidth, full motion picture, and video conferencing and complete Internet access.
Second-generation advancements emerged in the 1990s when two separate digital voice standards emerged. CDMA happened to be these competing standards – or Code Division Multiple Access – a standard which was able to multiplex up to 64 calls per channel in the 800 MHz band and GSM – Mobile Communication through Global System – which had the ability to multiplex 8 calls for every channel in the 900 and 1800 MHz bands.
Up until very recently, these two technologies existed in parallel. CDMA was mainly adopted in North America, whilst GSM found more of a global adoption. Technological advances within each system continue to narrow the differences between both.
For example, CDMA is now introducing a “SIM” card equivalent, catching up to a valued and well-established feature of the GSM network.
Third-generation, 3G technology cellular protocols, support far higher data rates, measured in terms of Mbps, for non-voice applications. The technology is continuously being developed ever since it was first introduced in 2001 in Japan and its current arrival means that 3G cell phones enter the market equipped with full Internet access, video conferencing and full motion video.
As the novel 3G technology is quite revolutionary, developers and engineers had to make some innovative upgrades to the already existing networks to make space for this new technology. Two distinct families emerged – 3GPP and 3GPP2 – and thus 3G cell phones were born.
3GPP and 3GPP2 continue to evolve during 2009. Complex services and standards are being developed and we can be sure that the latest 3G cell phones represent the cutting edge of what is available today.
It is true that some are referring to some ongoing advances which are in the direction of the birth of 4G, or fourth generation, but such ideas may be somewhat premature.
