I hear from my clients constantly how they struggled to find and make sense of all of the piles and files of information regarding Medicare and Medigap Insurance.
This article is not going to clear up all of that confusion. However you will find some very helpful information about accessing assistance in your quest for information and some hazards you will want to sidestep.
You don’t have to do this on your own. A licensed insurance agent can be a great resource for you. You may a,”How do I find the right agent?” There are a few things that you can look for that will help you identify the good ones.
1)Is the agent an independent agent? You want the answer to be yes. An independent agent is not tied to just one carrier. They can talk to you and provide information about all of the plans available in your area. Having access to info on many plans will insure that you can pick the right one for you. Avoid agents that work for one carrier. If an agent can only offer plans from one carrier, you may never even see the plan that may have been right for you. You also run the risk that if the agent separates from that company he/she will no longer be able to service your policy for you. In effect leaving you without an agent.
2) Always remember that the this is about you and your unique situation. A competent, professional agent will ask questions about your lifestyle, your health , how much you plan to travel, what you can afford. All of these factors should have an impact on your choice. No two cases are alike.
3)Try to find an agent or broker with plenty of experience with Medicare. The insurance business has many segments. It is impossible for any agent to know everything about every segment of the industry. There is just too much. Look for an agent who specializes in Medicare and Medicare Supplements. This agent will be up to date on all of the latest info and options. This agent is in a much better position to offer guidance that will benefit you long term. In this case, an agent who knows a lot about one thing is better than an agent who knows a little about a lot of things.
4)If you want to ensure that an agent available to you for customer service in the future, you can simply look at the agents past. Namely, how long have they been in the insurance business? It is relatively easy to get an insurance license. Huge numbers of people do it each year. Only a small percentage will have the determination and desire and love of the business to last through the first year. If you do business with one of the “newbies” you are taking the risk that when you need them down the line, they will be gone pursuing other dreams.
5)If you are truly going to benefit form working with an agent, that agent will speak to you in plain English. They will take the time to answer your questions and make sure that you really comprehend your options and how each option impacts your specific circumstances. You will not continue to be confused, rather you will move forward with the assurance that you had the facts and understanding to make the right decision.
6)Last but not least. Does it feel like the agent is more interested in what is good for him than what is good for you? Obviously everyone has to make a living, but a broker with good ethics knows that they will build their business by treating each client honestly and properly.
Help is available. Just take a deep breath, remember these points and you will find the right person to help you understand your Medicare and Medicare Supplement Plan options.
