What is a benefit period? A benefit period begins on the first day of a Medicare-covered inpatient stay. It ends when you have been out of the hospital or skilled nursing facility for 60 consecutive days. A new benefit period begins and the beneficiary must pay a new inpatient hospital deductible. There may be as many as five benefit periods in a calendar year.
