Why Vitamin K Foods And Medication Are Not A Good Mix

Dealing with getting rid of blood clots is not a piece of cake. If you’re familiar with blood clots, you have probably taken a blood thinner medication called warfarin. Warfarin works to prevent serious blood clots from forming in your system.

It is also used after a person has had a stroke. However, the only way that this medication can work the way it’s supposed to is if there is no interference.

Eating Vitamin K foods can stop the medication from doing its job. They can eliminate the potential it had to prevent potentially dangerous blood clots from forming. Vitamin K foods work to form clots in your blood. Blood clots are dangerous because they can cause you to have a heart attack or a recurring stroke.

Trying to prevent potentially dangerous clots is something that needs to be taken seriously. The medicine that you take (such as Warfarin) should work well enough that you can avoid clots from forming.

You will also prevent the occurrence of other serious health issues. However, if you consume Vitamin K foods, the opposite can occur. You can experience bleeding in your gums and nose. You can also experience serious bleeding problems where you could be hospitalized.

In order to keep up with your blood level, you can have your blood monitored on a regular basis. You will be able to see the clotting time of your blood. If the sample doesn’t show a quick or slow clot time, then you should be ok.

Some people can seem to discipline themselves to eliminate Vitamin K foods while they’re using blood thinner medication. Even though most of these foods are green, leafy and healthy, they don’t serve the purpose when you’re on the medication.

Here are some of the Vitamin K foods you should avoid while on the medication:

– Cabbage

– Broccoli

– Brussel Sprouts

– Collard greens

– Spinach

– Lettuce

In addition to that, you should also avoid consuming cranberry juice and alcohol. These drinks could be potentially dangerous when taking blood thinner medication.

This vitamin can alter the way the medication is supposed to work in your system. It can also decrease the potency of it by weakening the strength of the medication. These foods and the medication are definitely not a good mix. It’s not a good idea to take a chance on it.

It’s understandable that many people like Vitamin K foods, but with the potential of canceling out the work of the medication, not eating these foods is the best choice.
