You can’t say that vitamin B6 is the most important of the B vitamins, but it certainly ranks at the top of the list. There are so many things that it does that it has to be considered a real dynamo of the B’s.
Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin. It is found in three major chemical forms: pyridoxine, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine and performs a wide variety of functions in the body. B6 is essential for your good health.
Here is a list of the many vitamin B6 benefits:
It is needed for more than 100 enzymes involved in protein metabolism
It is needed for red blood cell metabolism.
Nervous and immune systems need vitamin B6.
The body needs it to make hemoglobin which is used within red blood cells to carry oxygen to tissues.
B6 helps increase the amount of oxygen carried by hemoglobin.
Without it, anemia can occur.
Vitamin B6, through its involvement in protein metabolism and cellular growth, is important to the immune system.
It helps maintain the health of lymphoid organs that make your white blood cells.
Animal studies show that a vitamin B6 deficiency can decrease your antibody production and suppress your immune response.
It also helps maintain your blood glucose (sugar) within a normal range.
When caloric intake is low, your body needs B6 to help convert stored carbohydrate or other nutrients to glucose to maintain normal blood sugar levels.
I believe that a healthy diet includes all of the basic food groups in sufficient quantities to supply all of your vitamin needs. It is most likely, however, that you will not get enough of the food you need to supply the right amount of vitamins to help operate at peak efficiency. Because of this, I usually recommend taking vitamin supplements responsibly. Only you know what your eating patterns are and you should try to determine what you are eating on a daily basis. B6, like all vitamins is very important to your good health. If you are getting enough through your diet, do not take an additional large dosage of B6.
The best way to get vitamin B6 is through your diet. Eat a variety of
fruits
vegetables
whole grains
fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products
lean meats
poultry
fish
beans
eggs
nuts
It is not difficult to get the right amount of this vitamin in your system if you can eat the proper diet. Since it is not practical for most people, I recommend getting it in a daily multiple-vitamin or a B-Complex vitamin that includes B6. Both the multi-vitamin and the Complex will have a sufficient amount for most people.
Vitamin B6 benefits are many, so don’t neglect getting the benefits daily either through your diet or supplements.
