A Short History of Vitamin C

At this time of year when colds and flu spread like wildfire, a food that could help you avoid such diseases would be very important. Fresh fruit and produce are always healthy choices. But particularly foods containing vitamin C are the ones to consume in the winter. H. G. Bohn once said, “Nature, time and patience are three great physicians.” It is the vitamin C in the foods that does the prevention and healing.

Vitamin C has a long history as a healing substance. It goes back earlier than 1536, although the supportive research was missing at that early date. In 1734 a Dutchman, Johann Bachstrom, wrote, “Scurvy is solely owing to a total abstinence from fresh vegetable food, and greens, which is alone the primary cause of the disease.” Vitamin C has long been in use by healers.

In more modern times a Doctor F. R. Klenner of Reidsville, North Carolina used injections of vitamin C to treat patients with polio and pneumonia and other viral diseases. In 1949 he addressed the American Medical Association, but since he was a relatively unknown practitioner and not a researcher, the AMA was inclined to ignore him.

Dr. Klenner did, however, have a lot of experience treating polio victims using vitamin C, and a great rate of success. He administered injections of one to two thousand milligrams ever two to four hours and usually the patients recovered within 3 days. He treated over 60 patients. These treatments were over a period of 7 years. Patients suffering from other viral infections who were treated with vitamin C, also recovered in about 3 days. But the doctors of the AMA were not open to accepting Dr. Klenner’s results. In 1939 Dr. Sabin had done experiments on monkeys and proved that vitamin C was ineffective against polio in monkeys.

Dr. Klenner had been treating patients with viral diseases for many years. His experience was in treating human beings, not animals. His control and confidence in applying vitamin C therapy grew as he had successful recoveries. Although the AMA was not accepting of Klenner’s findings, isolated doctors did try administering vitamin C, and had great results when following Klenner’s dosage prescriptions. They did not get results when they did something else.

During the 1950s isolated doctors around the world tried Klenner’s cure. Those who used vitamin C at doses below those recommended by Klenner reported no benefit; those who followed his dosages reported good results. Although nothing was done at the time to do more research into the successful use of vitamin C, a few doctors have studied the information and do deliver vitamin C intravenously in this day and age.

Angel Longevity Medical Center, located in Los Angeles, is one of the places where vitamin C therapy is administered. The staff and doctors there are interested in getting a good result for each patient, so they use what works. It is alternative medicine, but it is the results that count.

Vitamin C has shown to be of benefit to:

* Easing breathing difficulties

* Destroying viruses and bacteria

* Helping to overcome a cold or flu

* Pneumonia

* Stomach and bowel disorders

* Tiredness
