Is Network Marketing (aka Multi Level Marketing or MLM) the Right Business For You? – Part II

In Part I of this article, I raised the question of whether or not the entrepreneurial path is right for you. After all, not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. I also gave you some food for thought to help you determine if perhaps a network marketing business is an option worthy of your consideration. At this point, an assumption is being made that you’ve read part I and have determined that you do have the entrepreneurial spirit and you’re interested in network marketing. So, with that said, let’s go ahead and dig a little deeper, shall we?

Firstly, are you a people person? Network marketing is a true “people helping people” business and this is a good thing. When you’re working with, and helping others, you’re essentially helping them to solve their problems. And, many people who win in business are successful because they’re great problem solvers. Think about it, on a grand scale, Bill Gates is one of the world’s wealthiest people because his company creates software to help people and businesses solve problems. On a smaller, localized scale, think of the successful restaurant known for good quality, inexpensive food. Their success stems from helping mom and dad solve the “what’s for dinner” dilemma.

One more thing worthy of mention on this people helping people concept: it’s been said that a certain path to getting everything in life you want is to help enough other people get what they want in life. The more people you help, the better your chances of realizing the success you seek.

Are you coachable? This may be the most important question you’ll need to answer to determine if MLM is the right business for you. Let me explain: most people who get involved with network marketing (aka MLM, multi level marketing or social marketing) do not have any kind of a meaningful business background. Operating a successful business requires a number of crucial business skills. These skills include effective communication, organization and most of all, marketing.

If you do not possess these skills that’s OK. As long as you’re open to working with your upline people to develop yourself as a business person you’ll be fine. Some people think they already know everything and their way is the best way or the only way. If that person is you then there’s a good chance network marketing is not for you. Building a successful MLM business requires some outside the box thinking so being able to accept instruction from those more experienced is important.

Are you thorough? Anything done half fast is never good enough in business. If you get involved in a business and you’re provided with a plan and directions from your upline then it’s up to you to follow through with those plans. Cutting corners and weak efforts on your part will not fly. As it’s been said; in business, “good enough” is never good enough.

Of course, who you choose to work with to start a network marketing business is critical. If you’ll be taking business coaching and business plans from somebody else, you better darn well make sure that person knows their stuff. You can read books and study courses on building the skills you’ll need to succeed in business and I highly recommend that you do. But, your upline sponsor should be the person you wish to become.

There’s no doubt that working with the right people to build a network marketing business is of the utmost importance. However, your success is your responsibility. To succeed, you’ll need to think like a business person, act like a business person and conduct yourself in every way like a true business person. If you treat your network marketing business like a hobby it will lead to frustration and eventually failure. If you treat it like the legitimate business that it is, then you’ll be giving yourself a great chance of succeeding. Note I said “giving yourself a great chance”. Nobody will build your business for you. They’ll help you, oh yes they will, but they’re not going to do the required work for you. That, my friend, is up to you. Are you ready for the challenge?

This is the fourth in a series of articles on the MLM / social marketing / network marketing industry. In the next article I’ll give you some ideas on what you’d want to look for in the person or people you choose to do business with. Your business partners, on many levels, are even more important than the business you get involved in.

If you’d like to ensure that you don’t miss out on any installments in this series, I’d be happy to send past and future articles directly to you. Just shoot me an email and I’ll include you on my direct distribution list.
